So. it's finally here - our third (studio) album, 'we've all been swimming' will be out on Home Assembly Music on June 30th and is available to pre-order now here. It's taken some time, but we've worked hard on this one and hope you like it - there's a few more synths, a little less geography and a slight change of direction.

We promised an album in 2016, didn't we? Well, it's finished, mastered and has a home, so we're promising it for 2017 now. Sorry - the everyday fun of adult life got in the way.
We're not doing a top ten or anything, but if for some reason you've not heard it, "EARS" by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is the single best album released this year. And her live show is incredible too.

Back in January 2012, Western Front in Vancouver asked me to produce two hours of music to play at their 'Circle of Sleep' event over the weekend of January 20th - 21st 2012. I wasn't quite sure what to do, but ended up sat in a very dark room late in to the night on January 21st and played the slowest, most minimal piece of music I've ever played to a group of sleeping people.

I've made it available for 'pay what you like' download over at Bandcamp, here. It's meant to be played as a single two hour track, but it's impossible to upload a file that big, so it's been cut in to five tracks. Feel free to download for free, but if you'd like to pay anything that would be lovely.

We're currently working on the next studio album, which is (so far) proving to be the least 'ambient' thing we've done, so this felt like a nice time too share the other end of the spectrum.

30.12.13 - Fieldhead's Festive Five!

Some thoughts on my favourite five albums of 2013:

1 - Holden : The Inheritors
The stunning "Renata" is unquestionably this album's highlight, but the whole thing works together beautifully - analogue synths, almost glam rock rhythms ("The Catepillar's Intervention"), BoC-esque ambience ("The Illuminations"), trancey gorgeousness (the aforementioned "Renata") all come together in to an amazingly homogeneous whole. Extra marks for managing to evoke a nostalgic 70s synth feel without becoming enslaved to it either.

Best track: "Renata"

2 - Grumbling Fur : Glynnaestra
Although much of this album is forgettable, it's high points (namely 'The Ballad of Roy Batty" and "Protogenesis") are sublime. Both are repetitive, synthy and incredibly moreish - the kind of tracks that you constantly have on repeat and find yourself humming out of nowhere.

Best track: "The Ballad of Roy Batty"

3 - Secret Pyramid : Movements of Night
Vancouver's Secret Pyramid is one of only a handful of artists currently making ambient/drone that can genuinely hold my attention across an entire album, and Movements of Night is his best work yet. All the usual ambient adjectives are in place (bleak, beautiful, sparse, distant), but what holds his work above most others is the feel and sheer emotion of the album. A thoroughly engaging listen.

Best track: "A Descent"

4 - Machinedrum : Vapor City
Although a slight disappointment after the sheer brilliance of Room(s), Vapor City is still an excellent album. Travis Stewart's ability to meld what could be a terrible selection of rave keys, vocal samples and cheesy synth pads in to such a perfectly executed and atmospheric set of tracks is amazing.

Best track(s): "Baby Its U" / "Don't 1 2 Lose U"

5 - Factory Floor : s/t
I was completely unaware of any of the hype surrounding Factory Floor, and maybe this is why I didn't agree with the disappointment in this album that many others seemed to feel. Much like The Inheritors and Movements of Night its appeal lies in setting a mood and then hardly deviating for it for the entire album. It's a clinical, austere work, and one without much of a stand out track, but it genuinely feels like an album rather than a set of stand alone tracks, which is rare.

Best track: "Here Again"

Well, we have a few releases already planned which we're hoping to give you more information on early in the year, and we'll hopefully be back on the road (well, trains and planes, but that doesn't scan as well) too. In the meantime we're working on a soundtrack for Vancouver based film maker Amanda Thomson's new piece. You should watch her previous work here - its' excellent.
